Four Loko sighting

If you're looking for some Four Loko I saw plenty in Biloxi this weekend. It was at the Exxon at Popps Ferry and Pass Rd. I didn't check to see if it was 6% or 12% though.

James and His Curious Tools

Stefanie, James, and I spent the evening at one of our rental properties. Knocked out some painting, and removed baseboards for some tile work we're having done tomorrow. We also removed a couple of toilets (I hate messing with toilets by the way--they're nasty).

I was breaking the caulk seal between the floor and one of the toilets by banging on a putty knife with a crescent wrench (it's an old plumber's trick, but that's for another day). James took the crescent wrench to unbolt the other toilet, and asked what I wanted to use in its stead. I chose the hammer option, and James came back with a f'ing 23 oz. hammer. Twenty-three ounce hammers are not conducive to working in a tight bathroom between tub, shower, and vanity.

I'm going to have to have a sit-down with James about his novelty-size tools.

Don't Eat My Toast

Last Friday while toasting some raisin bread for breakfast I was scolded by my wife.  She pointed to the bananas and said those were for me and that the toast was for her.  My bad, I pleaded.  I had not even seen the bananas much less did I know I wasn't allowed to have toast for breakfast.

Fast forward to Monday afternoon at around 4:30 PM.  Shey just got home from work.  I am still at the office and my phone begins ringing.  Hooray!  It's my lovely wife.  (I do not remember the exact words, but you will get the gist)

Me: Hello
Her: Uhhh, why are you wasting my toast???
Me: Huh?  What are you talking about.  I love you.
Her: I'm standing here looking at toast in the trash can.
Me: I didn't throw away your toast.  I love you.
Her: I know!!!  I just threw it away because YOU left it in the toaster this morning.
Me: Huh?  I didn't make any toast this morning...(I was thinking "I love you" before being cut off)
Her: I know!!!  I put the bread in the toaster for you while you were getting ready.
Me: Oh, I didn't even see it.  I love you.  I wish you would have told me...
Her: I did tell you!!!
Me: Really?  I love you.  I don't remember.  I'm sorry.
Her: I told you while you were in the shower.
Me: Oh, you told me from the kitchen while I was in the shower?  I love you.
Her: Yes
Me: Well, no wonder I didn't hear you.  And I grabbed a banana because last week you yelled at me and told me the toast is for you and the bananas are for me.  I love you.
Her: No more toast for you.

2010 Starkville Hotel Update

Just getting around to noting our findings from our last trip (Kentucky game). I know this will disappoint many of you, but the University Inn is no more. I had the pleasure of staying at America's Best Value for the first time. This pretty much sums up my thoughts on it.

Luckily JoJo travels prepared.

ABV does have one thing going for it--it's right next to Hardee's.

Chicken Fried Bacon

Had the bluebonnet burger at Chrome Cactus yesterday. It's topped with chicken fried bacon. I've concluded that CFB is a lot better than CFS.

Political Ad Backfire

I got this in the mail today.

At this point, I'm thinking that Larry Gonzales is sounding pretty good.  The last page (not pictured) shows this is an ad for his opponent, Diana Maldanado (Texas State Representative).  Probably not the effect Maldanado was gunning for.  Hopefully others in my district will feel the same way.

Bad Dawgs

A couple good nuggets from The Reflector today:
11 p.m. A visitor reported his sister had his keys to his vehicle.
Okay, that's good...I guess.
2:54 a.m.A student reported he had an argument with his girlfriend at an unknown location.
And?  At least tell me the location?  Did you dot her eyes?

3rd Annual Backtoms Football Tailgate Plans

I'm pleasantly surprised to be heading into the weekend nationally ranked and on a nice winning streak (no whammies).  Here is what I know:

  • James/Shey, Nunnrey/Kaci, JT/Lisa and John all get to Jackson on Thursday.  Be on the lookout for our Pimp Mobile aka mini-van all weekend.
  • The above will be staying the night in Philly to make a little scratch to pay for the weekend.
  • Deebo plus (grown-up) girlfriend are arriving in Starkville Friday evening.
  • All of the above are staying at the luxurious America's Best Value Inn and Suites.
  • Clay/Shay are driving up on Saturday.
  • Current plans are to tailgate somewhere on the East side of Dorman (obviously subject to change due to availability).
Never heard back from some of you, but tickets are still available if anyone would like to join us.  And of course the more the merrier at the tailgate so join us for the day or at least swing by if you are around.

LaRue Range Day 2010

We (along with thousands of others) went out to LaRue's Range Day last weekend.  We spent a lot of time standing in lines, but it was cool nonetheless.  Can't beat free BBQ and shooting.  James and I had the opportunity to take some 1000 yard shots with well-equipped OBRs.  A thousand yards is a long distance--agree, or disagree?

Anyway, we didn't get to try out all of the stuff they had (e.g., suppressed, full-auto), but hopefully they'll do it again next year.  Off to Glocktoberfest this morning.

Agree or Disagree?

We had an interesting cab ride in Houston last weekend on our way to the game. The minivan cab that was in our hotel parking lot wasn't interested in cabbing us. The next driver was happy to take us. I sat shotgun with James, Shey, Nunnrey, and JoJo backing me up.

Since we had a few minutes I decided to make some small talk with the driver. The weekend is a blur, but I think I asked him how long he's been in Houston. The next thing I know, he's informing us that we'll never ride with a driver with more credentials than him. While he couldn't fully answer a couple of my questions (the answers were "long stories")--the condensed version was interesting enough.

He spoke about being amongst the best at what you do, and then told us that there are four professional sports of consequence. "Agree or disagree?" I agreed. It turns out that he played in the NBA. He rattled off some of his achievements, and they did sound impressive. He said we'd find out about him when we Googled him. I should say at this point that "agree or disagree" was put to me multiple times throughout the conversation. James and Nunnrey were enjoying that (enough so that Nunnrey texted me during the drive with "agree or disagree").

I glanced at his credentials on the dash, and Googled on our walk to the stadium. Turns out that our driver was John Drew.

So, I agree. We'll never ride with a driver that's done more.

Beef Jerky Recommendation

We stopped at the Beef Jerky Outlet in Destin last weekend. I'm digging their Smoky Mountain Beef Jerky. It looks like it's scored for ease of eating. Tried the Cajun and Spicy. They're both good. You're welcome.

Marketing 101

I had to go down to our rental property in San Marcos, TX this afternoon. There's some real estate type place down there that has an interesting attention getter. I've been seeing him the past year or two on my trips down there, and he was out there again today.

.380 ammo available again

Looks like .380 is making a comeback. For quite a while I haven't seen much quantity in stock, and the prices have been high. James and I split a case of PMC from Cheaper Than Dirt. It was $13.29 a box.

Cabela's in Buda, TX had a nice selection in stock this week too.

Bodyguard 380

Here is the newest addition

It's a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380.  It's pretty small.  It's 5.25" in length, weighs 11.85 oz and has an integrated INSIGHT laser.

Thanks to my wife for the cool birthday present.  Oh and I like the socks and boxers too.

Gun Gadgets

A couple of recommendations for my fellow AR-15 owners.

  • The C.A.T. M-4 Tool makes it a lot easier to clean your bolt carrier group.
  • James gave me an AR-15 LULA loader/unloader. Not that it's difficult to load AR mags, but this speeds up the process.

Uppity in MN

Minnesota columnist issues apology for disparaging Mississippi

St. Paul Pioneer Press Columnist Jim Ragsdale apologized to South Mississippians today for describing Mississippi as “a cesspool” in a video posted on the newspaper’s Web site as an attempt at humor to lure Brett Favre back for another season as quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings.

In the snow-shoveler's defense, it's an obvious attempt at humor, and I would have simply issued a get-a-life statement to anybody pretending to be bent out of shape over the video.

As an aside, all news sites have some pretty dumb commenters, but the Sun Herald has to be near the top with illiterate and/or illogical statements. (In general, not necessarily to the story linked to above.)

Chicken Fried Steak Review

Nunnrey and I tested out the Steak Bites at the San Marcos River Pub and Grill. The menu describes them thus:

Our famous chicken fried steak served in bite sized portions with fries and cream gravy...

It'd be cooler if they included a couple more steak strips, but they're pretty good. I think this might be my preferred way of eating this stuff. The steak was tender, and the breading had great adherence. It would probably be even better with a dash of some hot sauce. I forgot my carry bottle today. On the downside, the Coors Light wasn't at its optimum temp.

Sweet Tea Vodka Test

We had a sweet tea vodka taste test last night. The market has quite a few entrants now, and testing them all in one sitting is more than I want to tackle. Here's our lineup:

Tasting notes:

Firefly

First tried 1:1 vodka to HEB Seltzer. Was a little stiff, added more seltzer. Went to 2:3 ratio.

James: Where's the football game?

Shey: (Making faces) I prefer Coors Light.

Stefanie: Sweet. Would like to taste more tea.

John: It's aight, I appreciate the sweet, sweet flavor.

James adds that the girl at the liquor store said, "good choice," regarding the Firefly.

Firefly Mint

James: Not a fan of that at all.

Shey: Tastes like the last one with a wad of spit out Wrigley's gum in it.

Stefanie: Like a Mint Julep without the whiskey disgustingness.

John: I agree about the spearmint gum taste. I can drink it, but only as a last resort.

Firefly Lemon

James: Needs more water (this was at the 2:3 ratio). Would you like a little tea with your lemon? Tastes like John's shirt would taste, I imagine. [John is wearing a yellow shirt] I'd drink 5 bottles of this to not drink the mint.

Shey: Bad aftertaste. Better than the mint.

Stefanie: Tastes like bastardized Limoncello.

John: I had high hopes for this. I'm guessing it would be better if we put another dash of water in there. It's drinkable.

Deep Eddy

At this point we adjusted the ratio. It's now 1:2 (vodka:seltzer).

James: Very strong tea taste. Not syrupy. Tastes like they left a tea bag in there for a while.

Shey: Tastes more like unsweet tea than sweet.

Stefanie: My favorite so far. Tastes like real tea.

John: Because it's not as sweet, I think I could drink more of this over the course of the day.

Sweet Carolina

James: Sweet Carolina--made in Maine. Where's the tea?

Shey: [She dumped hers out, and started drinking some water.]

Stefanie: Harsh. Not very sweet. Fail.

John: I thought I liked this stuff based on past drinking experiences. I've changed my mind.

Seagram's

James: Six samples deep, and this is still hard to drink.

Shey: That's not very good. I don't like it.

Stefanie: It might have good tea flavor, but I can't tell over the battery acid.

John: Can vodka really contribute a bad taste like this?

Jeremiah Weed

James: The aftertaste is syrupy like I took a sip of regular Coke.

Shey: Tastes like the 1st one.

Stefanie: Too sweet.

John: Might be my favorite, but I'd like to add a little more water.

Overall picks

James: Firefly
Shey: Deep Eddy
Stefanie: Deep Eddy
John: Jeremiah Weed

Shey dumped everything she didn't drink into a cup creating some kind of sweet tea vodka bar mat for James to drink after we finished.

I hadn't heard of Bros Icing Bros until earlier this week. Here's a story with some background. James is painting his kitchen today, so I figured he could use a good icing.

University Inn Condos?

Developers oppose University Inn condo conversion project

The developers of CottonMill Marketplace fought what could be a renovation of the adjacent University Inn on Spring Street by another developer who asked the city Tuesday for a conditional use of the general business district.
Planning to turn the hotel’s 100 units into 50 condominiums, Larry Tabor of Tabor Properties LLC argued to the Board of Aldermen that the development, University Club Condominiums, would not hinder any plans for the Marketplace project.

I hope they plan on preserving the character of the Inn. It would be really nice to keep the furniture and bedding. Luke, we could be University Inn neighbors!

Bathroom Etiquette

Last year a company moved in to an office in our building that shares a common area containing the bathrooms.  As time has gone on everyone in my office has started noticing some unsettling behavior from the new people.  First, let me give you the lay of the land in the men's bathroom.  There are three urinals and three stalls.  There are also two sinks and a paper towel dispenser that is regularly stocked.  Here is a primitive (not to scale) diagram to give you an idea.

Problems:
  1. There are a couple of people we've noticed that regularly do not wash their hands after using the facilities.
  2. They do not respect the straight space at the urinals or in the stalls.
  3. An extension of #2 really, but there are several of these guys that will always choose urinal 2 (U-2 in the diagram) when they are the first man in which essentially makes all of the urinals off limits.
General rules I think everyone should play by in this bathroom configuration:
  • Always choose U-1, U-3 (or if the situation demands go with T-1 or T-3) if you are the first man in.
  • If you are the second person in make sure you leave at least one urinal/stall between you and the first man.
  • What about if U-1 and U-3 are taken?  Feel free to bump over to T-1 or T-3 (you don't have to sit down).
  • Only use U-2 or T-2 if there is no other choice.
Nunnrey (as our resident bathroom specialist), can you provide any additional insights/rules or corrections?

Isn't there a flash game out there about this?  I wonder how that entire office missed it.

3rd Annual Backtoms Football Tailgate Planning

It's getting that time of year again and we need to pick the weekend for our 3rd annual tailgate.  Here are the Saturday home games:

Sat, Sep 04 Memphis
Sat, Sep 25 Georgia
Sat, Oct 02 Alcorn State
Sat, Oct 23 UAB (HC)
Sat, Oct 30 Kentucky
Sat, Nov 20 Arkansas

Deebo already chimed in and is picking Georgia since we don't have an opportunity to see them at home as often.  My wife is wanting October so it will be cooler.  I don't necessarily have a preference, but I want to float it out there and see if we can get some consensus.  Put your comments on here or if you can't figure it out...email me.

Also, if you are planning on making it out to the game in Houston on October 9th let me know.  My crew will be heading down to tailgate.  Hopefully, this year John can refrain from breaking his leg.

5.11 Days Door Prize

GT Distributors had 5.11 Days (20% off all 5.11 gear) at their Austin location last week.  The promo featured extended hours, door prizes, and discounts on many items in the store.  John and I decided to go Friday morning before work since they opened at 7:30 AM.  We got 10% coupons as part of the "early bird" special.  And we also signed up for their hourly door prize drawings which included a hunting/fishing trip, a couple of Glock 22s and various other goodies.

Friday evening I received a call letting me know I won a door prize.  It was already closing time so they said I could swing by on Saturday or this week to come pick it up.  I was really hoping for a Glock, but I was happy to win anything.  Here is what I ended up with.
Contents of the 5.11 door prize bag (all 5.11 branded):
  • BBQ sauce
  • Dry rub
  • Coffee mug
  • Multi-tool
  • Carabiner
  • Cap
  • T-shirt
  • $25 gift card to GT Distributors
The gift card was genius.  I had already spent ~$100 on Friday, but now I had an additional $25 burning a hole in my pocket that I felt obliged to spend (which I did).

Vortex Bottles

I tried out the newest gimmick from Miller Lite over the weekend. That's right, I drank from the vortex bottle. Not sure I could detect it bringing out that triple hop brewing.

Drinking Made Easy

The Austin crew has been watching Three Sheets since its inception. We decided to check out Zane's Drinking Made Easy tour stop here last night.

It was entertaining, but I think I prefer to sit on the couch and just watch Three Sheets on TV. They do drink quite a bit during the show, so that's a plus. I would have preferred more of Zane's stories over Marc Ryan's comedy (he's ok, but not what I went for).

Chicken Fried Steak Review (Interview with James)

James had a CFS from the Louisiana Longhorn Cafe in Round Rock, TX last night. It looked pretty good.

Photobucket

Me: Is the breading sticking to the steak?
James: Not really.
Me: Is the breading greasy?
James: Nope, it tastes good.
Me: How's the gravy?
James: Me likey, it has some green onions and stuff to fancy it up.
Me: Is the steak tender?
James: Yup. It's a good total package. Can I finish my food?
Me: Sure.

Chicken Fried Steak Review

Had lunch at the Hill Country Cupboard today. They make quite the claim.

World's Best CFS? They offer a regular and a large. I went with the large so we could get an idea of what's available (and I eat a lot).

Photobucket

The steak and breading were good. The breading had good adherence. The gravy could have used a little spicing up. The menu listed a Mexican sauce, and in retrospect I should have gotten some of that to test too. So was it the world's best? I'll have to try a lot more CFS before I can decide.

Did you get a baby gift from me at some point? Was it a baby sling from Babies-R-Us? (I didn't pick it out, you put it on your wish list.)

Chicken Fried Steak Review

Had some CFS at The Texan Cafe tonight. The CFS was aight, and it's adequately sized. Not sure if this is a good place to go if you're thirsty though. After our initial drinks and meal were dropped off we weren't checked on again until we ready to leave. Maybe they were shorthanded tonight. They do have some pretty good pie.

Is it like this in Oklahoma?

Inmate slipped out of prison to buy cigarettes, officials say

I wonder if they let you come and go like this in OK jails. James, Nunnrey?

Coming on the heels of the latest round of official claims that Texas prisons have been made more secure was this news Monday: A convicted burglar who was supposed to be confined to a lockup near Houston went shopping last week for cigarettes and smokeless tobacco at an all-night discount center.

Prison officials never knew he was gone.

And after they were tipped to the late-night trip, officials confirmed Monday, they had to verify the escape by viewing the store's surveillance camera system — which was much better than the one the prison has.

Authorities said they were investigating reports that Skyler Steddum, 19, might have made as many as 70 such shopping trips from Sugar Land's Central Unit, where he was a trusty in a part of the prison without fences.

Starkville Wrapup

James and I went to Starkville last weekend. You want to hear about it? Aight. We had an eaaarly flight (6 AM'ish) from Austin to Jackson with a quick stop in Houston. The snow had been causing airport issues, but our flight was listed as a go when we left the house. We boarded our Southwest flight, and put some of our belongings in the middle seat to make it look occupied. They announced that the flight was completely full on several occasions, but we were holding out hope that we'd keep that comfort seat open. Everyone had boarded and the seat was still clear. I should rephrase that. Everyone that had gotten to the airport on time had boarded, and the seat was still clear. They continue to hold the plane at the gate while a high school cheerleading team trickled in. The seat was soon occupied, and before we knew it we were being asked how to buckle the seat belt. After our instructions failed to get the task done, I ended up having to buckle it for the poor girl.

Running long here--let me condense this down some. We get to Houston and are told our flight to Jackson is canceled. We're directed to stand in a line of 40-50 other folks trying to arrange alternative plans. A couple girls behind us were trying to make it to Jackson for a Saturday wedding (we'll circle back to them later). We stood near the end of this line for a few minutes when a dude from the front of the line walks up and asks if we're headed to Jackson. We affirm and he tells us that the remaining two flights are booked, that we could try to get on standby, but the odds of that aren't good. He then makes his proposal. He has rented a car and we can ride with him. We're not people to pass up a long ride with a stranger, so off we went.

Turns out he went to Ole Miss, and we worked out our 3 degrees of separation. The most notable part of this trip is we didn't stop once the entire trip; not for gas, not for bathroom breaks, and not for food. We left Houston right after 9AM, and he dropped us off at the terminal in Jackson at 2:52PM. That's fast, and it was snowing most of the way on I-55 in MS. Another funny thing to note about this leg of the trip. Ol' boy and I were discussing Toyota vehicles (we had passed a truck hauling new 'yotas). His family owns them and he vouches for their safety. Turns out he had hydroplaned off the road and rolled his car a while back, but made it out basically unharmed. Information like this would probably been helpful before we got in the car seeing that we had been hauling ace through the snow while the driver checked his Blackberry. James must have been too wrapped up in browsing Please Rob Me, as he missed that gem.

The only thing I want to report on in Starkville is the new Grill. The new location is open. It's very restauranty now. We stopped in around 11:30 PM Friday night.

Busy, huh? The main area has a bunch of booths. We met Clay and Shay up there on Sat. and heard maybe the worst news of all--they changed the honey mustard! They're now using the Sweet Peppers formula. (I wonder if they used my concept)

Well, one more thing, then I'm out. We saw this whip on campus.

Late Christmas Gift

For Christmas, my Dad gave me some cash and suggested that I pick up an optic for my AR-15. I think he felt my lack of an optic was a bit inferior to John's fancy EOTech. Well, I finally bit the bullet last Friday and ordered an Aimpoint CompML3 and Tactical QD mount from LaRue.

It arrived today, and again I'm impressed with LaRue (remember they sent me a Christmas gift and card). Today I received the same treatment that Mike C. did back last July when he received his upper from Larue. I got my bumper stickers, cap, Dillo Dust, beverage entry tool and my pocket-sized US Constitution.

Even with this latest purchase I'm losing the arms race on Backtoms. You may remember Brian posted about his pair of Glocks back in August and I'm told now that he's holding out on showing his new toys.

I'm lucky it wasn't all-you-can-eat catfish day at the TX Capitol today

http://www.statesman.com/news/local/alarm-at-capitol-after-shots-fired-190240.html

Gunshots rang out on the south steps of the bustling Texas Capitol on Thursday, minutes after authorities said the suspected gunman had exited a Houston senator's office after arguing and behaving strangely.

Fun in Houston

Check out one of the kids the news interviewed about a high school photo controversy.

The money quote, "Apparently C and L just walked away, and that just leaves ASS. That's not ASS's fault, that's C and L's fault."

Job Opportunity

Looking at the latest Harrah's blog update today and they mentioned that the Chippendales auditions are this week:
Seeking male LEADS with exceptional physical builds and the ability to learn fully choreographed production numbers. Must be at least 5' 10". Also seeing attractive MC's and VOCALISTS who move well.
Sounds like this might be perfect for some of you. I'm not coordinated enough for fully choreographed production numbers and Luke might not make the height requirement, but I'm sure he could make it as an "attractive MC."

Tip of the Week: How to Survive in Federal Prison

My Google homepage has a wikiHow link on it today that looks worthy of sharing just in case. It's called How to Survive in Federal Prison.

And if you have the spare time check out the related wikiHows near the bottom for surviving a night in jail and setting up bail while in jail. The latter could have been useful for some guys I know that were stuck in a county jail in Oklahoma (not a state they resided in). I didn't see an article about what to do if you are too large for the jumpsuit though...maybe I'll contribute some information I've heard before.

Chicken Fried Steak Review

Met up and Nunnrey and JoJo for dinner at the Gristmill restaurant in Gruene, TX today. Had the CFS.

The picture looks like it came from a gas station security camera. It was pretty tasty; nice size, and the breading was about as good as you can expect. The squash was good too.

Also discovered they make 24 oz. SipSacs now (or maybe they've been making them for years, and I've just been overlooking them like Twang).

Road Trip: Founders Day 2010

It's March 26-28 this year. Georgia will be playing our baseball team in Starkville that weekend. I believe all of the normal golf and crawfish festivities will be on again. Anyone planning on going?

Also, anyone got any tickets for sale (or know someone that's selling) for the Auburn @ MSU basketball game on Feb 13? John and I will be in Starkville and for a reasonable price would like to go to the game.
